Is backflow dangerous?
In 1997 a major U.S. city reported that a fireline backflow assembly malfunctioned allowing backflow into the water system. Again during the years of 1995 to 1997 malfunctions in a water softener at a country club and a carbonated beverage machine at the snack bar of a chain discount store; and residential toilet tank malfunctioning caused major backflow in the other U.S. city. Several years later, a city faced the problem of colored and distasteful water in its system caused by back siphonage from an unprotected funeral home.

Pressure Vaccum Breakers (PVB)
A PVB is an assembly containing an independently acting, internally loaded check valve with a loaded air inlet valve, located on the discharge side of the check valve. A PVB shall have two resilient-seated isolation valves attached at each end of the assembly and two properly located resilient seated test cocks. It only helps with backsiphonage backflow problems.
What can cause backflow?
There are multiple conditions which can cause water backflow such as –
- Cross Connection Backflow – It is a connection between a potable water supply and any source of contamination. A cross connection can lead to a dangerous situation where the contaminated or waste water may enter the supply water pipelines thus contaminating an entire city’s water supply. Some classic examples of cross connection that can occur in any household are:
- Bidets cross connection – can be resolved using Vaccum Breakers.
- Dishwasher Cross Connection – can be resolved using Air Gap Devices.
- Garden Hose Cross Connection – can be resolved using Atmospheric Vaccum Breakers.
Cross Connection Backflow has the potential of allowing contaminants into the drinking water system.
- Back Siphonage Backflow – Back siphonage may be caused by atmospheric pressure exerted on a pollutant liquid, forcing it towards a potable water supply i.e. instead of water entering the tank of a house, the entire content of the tank which might contain insecticides were drawn into opposite direction into the potable water supply. For example, it can occur when the pressure in a tank or water trough is lower than the water system’s pressure. This could allow the influx, or pulling, of contaminated water into the system.
- Back Pressure Backflow - Back Pressure occurs when the pressure downstream increases over the upstream or supply pressure in a public water or consumer's potable water system and causes a reversal in the flow of water. This downstream pressure can be generated by pumps, temperature increases in boilers, etc. For example, when there is higher water pressure in a fire protection system or in a multi-story building that contaminated water could be forced into the public water system. When this happens the water system can become contaminated with pollutants that could be harmful to water users.
